Would You Post Crime Video on YouTube?
The images above are from some security camera videos posted on YouTube.
- Smash And Grab Video 1 is a very boring video showing 10 minutes of the front door. It does show another angle on the theft. It gives a better view of the car and what the man in the white hat is doing when he isn’t breaking windows and grabbing beer.
- Smash And Grab Video 2 has some action. The man in the white hat cases the scene, goes back to a friend in the get-away vehicle and then comes back to smash through the poster and window to grab some beer.
- Smash and Grab Video 3 is a flashback scene to December 2006 (of last year no less) in which the role of the smash and grabber is played by an individual in a parka-like outfit. Same tactic, similar car.
I would not like to draw the kind of attention this video is going to get. You are giving dangerous ideas to people who probably don’t get ideas very often, and potentially ticking off someone who may want to strike back. On the other hand, it may make people think twice about hitting your store when they realize those cameras do give you video you can show the world.
It is unfortunate that they did not have an outside camera able to view the license plate. This is a good idea for church’s as well. Place an external camera somewhere that has a good view of where a car will likely need to pull up in order to do anything inside your building. Our cameras which do this are all currently inside looking out through strategic windows. It saves some costs on external enclosures.
