Church Robbed by Courier Impersonator
East 91st Street Christian Church in Indianapolis, IN is a congregation with about 4500 people in attendance each week. The church makes use of a courier service to transport their weekly offering to the bank, but the week of April 29th did not turn out very well. The church financial controller handed over approximately $145,000 in personal checks and $7,000 in cash to someone impersonating the courier. They realized their error later in the day when the real courier arrived.
The Story: Thief impersonates courier, steals from church
The solution to something like this happening at your church is simple, make sure you properly ID anybody who comes in contact with your offering. I know how easy it is to get confused with the number of new people brought in by companies experiencing high employee church, but make sure you have a way of confirming who it is that is supposed to be picking up the money.
All confirmation of this type of individual should be initiated by you, not by the person needing to be identified.
